Director of Composition

Since 2021 I have been Director of Composition at Appalachian State University. In that role, I lead new faculty orientation, coordinate professional development, mentor graduate student teachers, and carry out assessment for our first- and second-year writing courses.

I work with a dynamic, lively group of writing faculty! While I have been director, our program has:

  • Hosted a yearly Rhetoric and Composition Institute featuring speakers like Stephanie Kerschbaum and Sheila Carter-Tod and workshops led by our faculty

  • Created a custom textbook, Voices for Change: Language, Identity, and Community, that reflects our focus on justice and rhetorical ethics

  • Weathered COVID and emerged a strong, inclusive, and versatile group of teachers

  • Developed high-quality online courses that emphasize collaboration and multimodal writing

  • Worked with our chair, Leonardo Flores, to (successfully!) advocate for higher lecturer salaries
