Welcome!

Bethany Mannon, PhD

Hi! I am Dr. Bethany Mannon

I am a teacher of rhetoric and composition, a scholar of feminist and religious rhetoric, and a writing program administrator who loves helping my colleagues thrive. Originally from New England, I now live in East Tennessee and work as Assistant Professor of English at Appalachian State University.

My book, I Grew Up in the Church: How Evangelical Women Tell Their Stories will be published by Baylor University Press in 2024. You can also find my writing in Rhetoric Society Quarterly, College Composition and Communication, Rhetoric Review, Peitho, and other journals and collections.

I completed my PhD at Penn State University in 2015 where I wrote my dissertation on the activist turn in American women’s memoirs. Before coming to App State, I worked as a researcher for the Hemingway Letters Project (I contributed to volume 4, shown in the picture). I also taught rhetoric and Women’s Studies at Old Dominion University.
